Neurosurgery, epilepsy, nerve injury, and pain.
My clinical specialty is Neurosurgery, with emphasis on nerve injury, pain, and epilepsy. My expertise within that specialty is pain mechanisms, epilepsy mechanisms, radiation injury, and nerve regeneration. Research. In the past 20 years, I have held numerous positions as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on research projects funded by CDC, FDA, NIH, NINCDS, and Elekta Corporation (industry). I hold active grants for clinical trials that investigate surgical therapies in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (NIH), and long-term treatment of epilepsy patients with an implanted neurostimulator (Neuropace). Publications. I have published over 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including American Journal of Neuroradiology, Annals of Neurology, Epilespia, Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Neurosurgery, among others.

I have established collaborations with Kathryn Jones on peripheral nerve regeneration, with Xiaoming Jin on post-traumatic epilepsy, with Xiao-Ming Xu on spinal cord injury, and with Eric Horn, Richard Rodgers, and Scott Shapiro on clinical trials of spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury.
